Social media management

Project description

From 2009-2014, I maintained the MIT Libraries’ Twitter & Facebook presences. I grew the Twitter feed from 0 to over 10,000 followers, and Facebook from 0 to 5,000. Compared to similar institutions, the MIT Libraries has one of the most followed Twitter accounts.

Challenges

Identifying the primary audience was tricky. Many of the Libraries’ followers were members of the MIT community, but an equal segment was just generally interested in topics about major acadmic libraries. The content for those two segments didn’t always overlap, so we targeted the current MIT community for most messages, and sprinkled in general content that might appeal to the wider audience.

Because maintaining the Libraries’ social media presence was only a tiny piece of my job, I didn’t have as much time to devote to it as it deserved. A few years ago, I gathered a small team of people to help nurture the feeds and carry on the with the proper tone and message. I crafted a social media mission statement to help the new team members find the proper content and tone for our primary audience.
